Report: Apple Probing New iPad Wi-Fi Connectivity Problems

Apple is reportedly investigating Wi-Fi connectivity issues with its new iPad.

According to an internal document posted by 9to5Mac (click below for larger image), Apple is aware of an issue affecting the Wi-Fi on select new iPads, and instructs those affected to contact Apple.

"Symptoms can include, but are not limited to: Intermittent connectivity, slow Wi-Fi speeds, Wi-Fi network not seen," the documents reads.

The memo instructs Apple Store and call center employees to "capture" new, Wi-Fi-only iPads exhibiting these symptoms. 9to5Mac noted that this usually means that the tablets are shipped to Apple's engineering centers for investigation. "Apple will replace affected units," the blog said.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

New iPad Wi-Fi Problems

Reports about Wi-Fi connectivity problems first surfaced in the days after the release of Apple's latest iPad when buyers took to Apple's forums to complain.

"I am in a hotel with my laptop and new ipad3," wrote a user known as stlsteve. "The laptop wifi reception is as strong as it gets, but the iPad only registers a weak signal. Anyone else having similar problems? Any suggestions?"

New iPad users have continued to post to the thread, with the latest complaint coming in this morning. "We have 2 iPads. One is an iPad2 and the other the new iPad. We can use them side by side on the same sites and the wi-fi reception on the new iPad is much lower than the iPad2," wrote thechrisjday.

The problem apparently does not affect the 4G LTE model thanks to "the extra network power allowed by the black rubber cut on the top of the unit," 9to5Mac said.
