Dell Picks Up Wyse to Extend Desktop Virtualization Offerings

PC maker Dell on Monday morning announced the acquisition of cloud client computing firm Wyse Technology, which offers products for the central management of IT resources. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell said the buy will bolster its desktop virtualization offerings and extend its enterprise solutions portfolio. The deal has been approved by the boards of directors of both companies, and Dell expects Wyse to add to its fiscal earnings by 2013.

San Jose, California-based Wyse, founded in 1981, offers a range of thin and zero-client solutions, as well as desktop virtualization and cloud software. Virtual desktop solutions allow some enterprises to manage their users and devices more securely and efficiently.

"Desktop virtualization can help organizations streamline IT management, improve productivity and security, and increase cost efficiency for discrete workloads or usage scenarios," Jeff Clarke, president of end user computing solutions at Dell, said in a statement. "Wyse's technology will help Dell offer customers computing choices "from the edge to the core to the cloud."

Wyse has shipped more than 20 million units worldwide, and has 200 million people interacting with its products every day. The company also has more than 180 patents, both issued and pending, that cover its software and other intellectual property.

The market for desktop virtualization solutions is expected to see strong growth going forward, especially when tied with data center infrastructure, Matt Eastwood, group vice president of enterprise platform research at IDC, said in a statement.

"Thin client and desktop virtualization solutions typically drive high attach rates to data center solutions, including servers, networking, storage and services," Eastwood said. "The end-to-end datacenter infrastructure stack for these solutions is expected to exceed $15 billion by 2015."
