Toshiba Announces Giant 13.3-Inch Tablet

Excite 13

Toshiba today announced three new additions to its family of Excite tablets. The most interesting is the Excite 13, a massive tablet with a 13.3-inch screen. But there are also new options in smaller, more manageable sizes.

Let's start with the big one. At 13.3-inches, the Excite 13 will offer more screen real estate than any other tablet on the market. Despite the massive display, it's relatively thin and light, at 0.4 inches thick and 2.2 pounds.

The Excite 13 features a 13.3-inch LED display with 10-finger touch support, a 16:9 aspect ratio, and 1600-by-1900 pixel resolution. There's also a four-speaker sound system, which means it should get plenty loud. An included stand makes it easy to prop the device up on a countertop or table, which means it should be good for watching and sharing media like video.

Dialing the size down a notch, the Excite 10 features a 10.1-inch LED display with 1280-by-800 pixel resolution. Similar in size to the new Apple iPad, the Excite 10 measures 0.35 inches thick and weighs 1.32 pounds. It delivers up to 10 hours of battery life and seven days of standby.

The smallest of Toshiba's new tablets, the Excite 7.7, is Toshiba's first to feature an AMOLED display. Toshiba says the super-saturated, non-PenTile screen is comparable to other leading AMOLED technologies—by which they mean Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus—but Toshiba isn't allowed to use that brand name. The display measures 7.7 inches and features 1280-by-800 pixel resolution. Naturally, it's slimmer and lighter than the two larger tablets, at 0.3 inches thick and 13.4 ounces.

Each of these three tablets feature aluminum shells and scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass displays. They are running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and powered by quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processors, which should allow for plenty of high-end gaming.

Additionally, each tablet is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera on the back, along with a 2-megapixel, front-facing camera for self portraits and video chat. They will all be Wi-Fi only.

The Excite 10 tablet will be available at the beginning of May starting at $449.99 for a 16GB model. The Excite 7.7 and Excite 13, meanwhile, will be available at the beginning of June. The Excite 7.7 will start at $499.99 for a 16GB model, while the Excite 13 will start at $649.99 for a 32GB model.
