Adobe Adds eSignature Capability to Reader

Adobe Reader eSignature

If you've been dying to dump your fax machine, but holding onto it to send the occasional signed document, then today might just be your lucky day.

Adobe on Tuesday updated its Adobe Mobile Reader for Android and iOS apps, adding an e-signature feature that lets users sign and send documents from their smartphone or tablet. Adobe also released an update for its desktop app, Adobe Reader X (10.1.3) that includes the same signature tool.

The new capability for smartphones, tablets, and desktops allows users to electronically sign a document by drawing their signature with their finger on their device's touchscreen. Desktop users, meanwhile, can add a typed or cursive signature.

Users can also get others to sign documents electronically, as well as track and manage the status of their document online. Signed documents are archived in the cloud, so users can retrieve them anywhere they have an internet connection.

"The days of printing, signing and faxing back signed documents are numbered," Kevin Lynch, senior vice president and general manager of Adobe Acrobat and Document Services, wrote in a blog post Tuesday.

The new e-signature feature was made possible though the integration of EchoSign, a web-based electronic signature platform that Adobe acquired in July.

The updated app, Adobe Mobile Reader 10.2, is available for free on the iOS App Store and Google Play. It also adds capabilities that let users interact with PDFs directly from their iOS or Android devices. With the latest version, users can highlight strikethrough or underline any text with annotation tools. Users can also now comment on PDF documents and fill out simple PDF forms, all on their mobile device.
