IBM Ushers in 'New Era of Computing' With PureSystems

IBM Logo

Don't look for it on Jeopardy, but IBM today announced a new integrated computing platform, dubbed PureSystems. Unlike the gameshow-winning supercomputer, Watson, PureSystems provides integrated services designed to centralize the management of IT infrastructure.

IBM PureSystems supports multiple hypervisors and types of compute nodes enabling users to manage all resources as a pool within a single management screen.

The new platform has three major components:

  • "Scale-In" System Design: A system design that integrates server, storage, and networking into one machine. This design provides increased density, able to handle twice as many applications when compared to other IBM systems. This results in double the computing power per square foot of data center space.
  • Patterns of Expertise: Software that allows systems to automatically handle basic tasks such as configurations, updates, and app requirements. This task automation frees up IT management time.
  • Cloud Ready Integration: All PureSystem products are cloud-ready, allowing orgnizations to deploy private clouds that can quickly scale up or down.

"With its new scale-in design and built-in expertise, PureSystems represents an important advance in the evolution of computing," said Steve Mills, senior vice president and group exective of software and systems at IBM. "By tightening the connections between hardware and softwarem and adding incomparable software know-how, PureSystems is designed to help clients to free up time and money to focus on innovation that many businesses cannot address due to ever rising costs abnd staffing needs in the traditional data center."

The first two PureSystem models - PureFlex System and PureApplications System - will ship this quarter. PureSystems support POWER and Intel processors.
