Mobile News Aggregator App Zite Unveils Publisher Program

Zite iPad New Aggregator App

Mobile news aggregator Zite on Wednesday announced the launch a new program to give a number of publishers their own sections of the app.

Zyte users will now see publisher-specific sections alongside the app's existing subject-based sections (such as World News, Politics, and Arts & Culture). The program is launching with sections for a handful of news sites, including Bleacher Report, CNN, The Daily Beast, FOX Sports, HLNtv, Motley Fool, The Huffington Post, The Next Web, and VentureBeat. The new publisher-specific sections will contain that publisher's content only, unlike the topic-based sections, which contain content from several sources.

"Zite's collaboration with the group of innovative publishers joining us today is yet another example of publishers embracing the unique opportunities of the mobile word, especially tablets," Martin Stoddart, vice president of business development at Zite, said in a statement. Stoddart added that Zite hopes to grow its list of publisher partners in the coming months, "with a focus on premium publications with extensive editorial content to match each of our major topic areas."

Zite, a personalized reading app for the iPad, iPhone, and Android devices, feeds users content based on the buzz happening in their social networks, articles they have read, and their ratings of stories. Zite was acquired by CNN last August for an estimated $20 million, though Zite has continued to operate as a standalone business.

In reviewing the iPad app, PCMag found that "Zite works surprisingly well, and sports a very wallet-friendly price (free!), making it a news app that every iPad owner should at least sample." For more, see the slideshow below.

Also on Wednesday, Next Issue Media, a joint venture between Conde Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corp, and Time Inc., formally unveiled its Android tablet newsstand. The venture will include 32 titles, including Better Homes and Gardens, ELLE, Esquire, Fortune, Glamour, Parents, People, Real Simple, Sports Illustrated, The New Yorker, Time, and Vanity Fair.
