T-Mobile, HTC Launching HTC One S Next Week

HTC One S (T-Mobile) Invitation

HTC and T-Mobile will launch the HTC One S Android smartphone at an April 18 event in New York, the companies said Wednesday.

The announcement was made via an invitation that was sent out to reporters, inviting them to the hands-on event next Wednesday at 7 p.m. at a New York City location.

In early April, HTC launched the One S abroad in Europe and Asia, but the U.S. model will reportedly differ somewhat. T-Mobile's HTC One S is closer to the European model of that device, but will have different radio band assignments and different preloaded apps. The European One S will not run properly on any U.S. nationwide 3G network, for example, because it lacks the 1,900Mhz 3G band.

The European version of the HTC One S includes a 4.3-inch display, with a 960-by-540 qHD resolution. It measures 5.15 by 2.56 by 0.31 inches. Inside, it contains 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and is powered by a 1.5-GHz, dual-core 28nm Snapdragon S4 chip, according to Engadget.

The HTC One series is also being picked up by other U.S. carriers, but with different models. The One V will be branded by MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, and U.S. Cellular. AT&T and HTC also unveiled the HTC One X, which includes LTE capability. That phone includes a 4.7-inch, 1280-by-720-pixel Super LCD 2 screen and a Qualcomm S4 processor, not the Tegra 3 that the global model uses.

The One X has a new image-processing chip, which HTC claims can autofocus in 0.2 seconds and go shot-to-shot in 0.7. And with HDR mode, you can take a photo with a bright background, have it balance out the foreground and background, and not need to wait several seconds for it to assemble. Another neat trick: you can shoot pictures in the middle of capturing a 1080p HD video without missing a beat. The phone has a 1.3-megapixel front camera, too.
