Spotify Unveils Coca-Cola Deal, But No iPad App

Spotify Press Event

Next time you fire up Spotify, you might just find yourself reaching for a Coke.

The popular streaming music service has entered into a "global partnership" with Coca-Cola, the companies announced during a Wednesday press conference in New York City. As part of the partnership, the beverage giant will launch an app on Spotify and integrate the streaming music service on its Facebook page. Coca-Cola will also leverage its global presence to help Spotify expand into new markets.

"From Spofity perspective, this partnership is just as important as the Facebook relationship for us," Spotify CEO Dan Ek told reporters.

But for all the hype leading up to Spotify's second U.S. news conference, the event fell short of expectations, failing to deliver the news many had hoped for - an iPad app. No such luck.

When asked about when his company would release an iPad app, Spotify CEO Dan Ek said it was "in the works," but declined to provide any other details. Ek then brought the conversation back to the Coke partnership, noting it could eventually lead to live music events and the release of rare music from Coke's archives.

In addition to the Coke deal, Spotify will be adding apps from companies like McDonald's, AT&T, Intel, and Reebok in the coming months, Ek said earlier on Wednesday during a keynote speech at the AdAge Digital Conference. The brand apps will be found inside Spotify's desktop app, and some will feature more than just music playlists. The AT&T app, for instance, will let users view the locations that popular songs were recorded.

Spotify held its first U.S. news conference back in November, when it opened its network up to developers, launching integrated apps inside Spotify.
