We're but two weeks or so away from the rumored announcement of Samsung's Galaxy S III smartphone, the much-anticipated successor in Samsung's flagship line of Android smartphones that may or may not even be called the Galaxy S III: That's just how tight Samsung's internal security has been about any and all leaks surrounding this new device.
Until yesterday, that is.
According to The Verge's Bryan Bishop, Amazon Germany has allegedly (and likely, accidentally) listed the Galaxy S III for preorder on its site. And, in doing so, a few of the rumored specs of the device have shifted a bit closer to the "possibly true" side of the rumor meter. Unfortunately, the juiciest details – like what's going to power the smartphone itself – remain in the dark.
If Amazon Germany is to be believed, then the Galaxy S III is going to run a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen – identical in type to Samsung's Galaxy Nexus and all of 0.5 inches larger (unless Amazon Germany's rounding up). There's no indication as to what the final resolution of the Galaxy S III is going to be, although most rumors thus far point to a 720p display. Sorry, 1080p hopefuls.
The specs list on Amazon Germany makes note of a 12-megapixel camera, more than double the five-megapixel variant found on the Galaxy Nexus. However, the site also notes that the Galaxy S III will allegedly come with, "16 GB of internal memory, expandable up to 32GB."
As Bishop correctly comments, it's a strange size limitation if the Galaxy S III is going to support microSD storage like its predecessor, given that microSD cards can offer a bit more storage than 16 gigabytes. Unless Samsung plans to launch separate 16-gigabyte and 32-gigabyte versions of the Galaxy S III, that is – a doubtful proposition, but one that's certainly possible.
And that's it! Amazon Germany doesn't list any additional details save for the device's pre-order price: €599 Euros, or nearly $800 U.S. That's not a lot to go on. But with the mobile world gearing up for a big Galaxy S III announcement on May 3, at least that's not very long to wait for final specs, either.
