Sony PlayMemories Online

Sony is reportedly close to launching PlayMemories Online, a cloud service that will be used to store photos and videos that users capture online.

Sony has published a PlayMemories site that promises that the service will be live in "Spring 2012". PC World reported that the service will launch next week, with 5 Gbytes of storage available for free to users.

The service will initially be available in six countries - Japan, the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, and the U.K. - from May 25, the magazine reported.

Sony representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Samsung is also reportedly working n its cloud service, dubbed S-Cloud.

According to the video (embedded below) the Sony service, will bring videos and photos to the Android platform as well as to Apple iOS. An accompanying description claims that the service will bring content to smartphones, tablets, and to Sony Bravia televisions. Content will be able to be shared privately with family and friends.

"Enjoying your memories shouldn't be such a hassle," the video says. "And it doesn't have to be. PlayMemories Online from Sony brings your photos and videos to your fingertips."

Users can also enjoy video and digital music with an account on the Sony Entertainment Network platform, the newly-renamed service that previously included Sony Music Unlimited. The EU recently cleared Sony to buy EMI's music publishing division.

At the end of March, Sony announced a "One Sony" reorganization that saw the company refocus on its game console and mobile business. About 10,000 workers will lose their jobs as a result.
