Diablo III Goes Live; MacBook, iCloud Refreshes; Best Buy Chairman Out

Topping tech headlines yesterday was the anticipated Tuesday release of Diablo III. Gamers lined up at retail stores while others waited patiently in the early morning hours for the Battle.net servers to go live. Meanwhile, Apple is reportedly readying a brand-new, 15-inch MacBook Pro that will sport an ultra-thin design, a higher-resolution Retina display, and USB 3.0 ports. Citing unnamed supply chain sources, 9to5Mac reported that the updated laptop is currently in test production, and is slated to come out this summer.

Apple's iCloud services, meanwhile, is reportedly about to get an upgrade. Citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple will announce new photo-sharing features for iCloud at next month's Worldwide Developer Conference.

In other news, Best Buy's founder Richard Schulze is stepping down as chairman of the electronics chain. Best Buy said Monday that it had elected director Hatim Tyabji to succeed Schulze, after the board found that Schulze had not reported former chief executive Brian Dunn's relationship with a female employee.

  • T-Mobile's Free Tethering Ending with 'Ice Cream Sandwich': HTC's upgrade of the HTC Sensation on Wednesday to Android 4.0 will be bittersweet, as a T-Mobile representative said that the company will begin enforcing its $14.99 per month wireless hotspot plan.
  • Hands On: Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon: Already a category contender with the IdeaPad U300s, Lenovo aims for the executive elite with what it calls the world's lightest 14-inch ultrabook.
  • Report: Microsoft Offering $14.99 Upgrade to Windows 8: The upgrade offer will be timed at about the release date of the Release Preview of Windows 8, due at about the same time in early June.
  • Kaspersky, Apple Hunting for Mac OS X Bugs? Not Exactly:  Kaspersky Lab denied that the security firm had been commissioned by Apple to help improve the security of Mac OS X.
  • LinkedIn Releases Windows Phone App: The app makes use of the Windows Phone Metro-style user interface and Live Tile capabilities, letting users access real-time updates from contacts and groups, read industry news, and explore job listings.
  • Court Revives Apple's Bid to Ban Samsung Tablets in U.S.: The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit remanded a design-related patent back to the district court, which must reconsider a ban on Samsung's Galaxy Tab.
  • Apple Renames New iPad 'Wi-Fi + Cellular' in Some Markets:  Apple dropped the "4G" moniker from its new iPad in countries where the tablet does not actually run on 4G networks.
  • Kickstarter API Bug Reveals Unlaunched Projects: The glitch occurred when Kickstarter launched its API in conjunction with its new homepage on April 24 and was live until May 11.
