By the Numbers: A Look at Ex-Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson's Short Reign

Yahoo! (Summer 2009)

The stories have been confirmed and the writing's on the wall for Yahoo's to-be-ex-CEO. Scott Thompson's officially gone, and with his departure comes more head-scratching than sadness.

It seems almost silly that Thompson managed to blunder his way out of the position so quickly – practically entering and exiting the embattled search company in the time it takes one to yodel the company's trademark, "Yahooooooooooooo!" But don't take our word for it. Let's run the numbers on Thompson's expeditious Yahoo career.

126 days – Four months and five days, or the total length of Thompson's career as CEO of Yahoo.

90 days – The total number of Monday-through-Friday business days (not counting vacations, holidays, or any of that) that Thompson could have worked during his tenure.

13 percent – The amount of time Thompson's reigned as CEO versus his harsher-tongued predecessor, Carol Bartz.

2,000 – The approximate number of jobs slashed at Yahoo during the company's first big Thompson-era layoff.

22 – The average number of Yahoo employees laid off for every business day Thompson could have worked.

241 – The total number of words for Scott Thompson's biography in a proxy statement previously filed to the SEC.

285 – The total number of words found in Scott Thompson's apology memo, sent last week to all Yahoo employees.

3 – The total number of falsified words in the aforementioned biography.

1 – The total number of degrees Scott Thompson has from his alma mater, Stonehill College (Bachelor's of Science in Accounting)

2 – The total number of undergraduate degrees listed for Scott Thompson in the aforementioned biography (A Bachelor's of Science in Accounting and Computer Science)

12 – The total number of patents Yahoo claims Facebook infringes, a wildly controversial lawsuit set into motion during Thompson's tenure.

6 – The total number of CEOs Yahoo has enjoyed within the past five years.

7 – The Total number of letters (we've uncovered so far) that activist shareholder and new Yahoo board member Daniel Loeb fired off to the Yahoo board of directors during Thompson's time as CEO.

"A Lot More" – The total number of thumbs-up votes for a comment (on an internal Yahoo site) that said Thompson should be fired versus the total number of thumbs-up votes for his posted apology.

$7 million – The estimated amount of "make-whole" bonus cash that Thompson will likely be allowed to keep even if Yahoo fires him for-cause.

$1 million – Thompson's annual salary, of which he will have earned nearly $350,000 during his 18-week stint.

48% – Approval rate of Scott Thompson, as reported by 42 users on Glassdoor.

5 – The Total number of Yahoo board members leaving immediately as a result of the (horribly named) Thompson-gate/Resume-gate/etc.

-2% – Change in Yahoo's overall stock price from the beginning to the end of Thompson's time as CEO.
